I have a kindergarten student that is extremely shy. He will not talk to the teacher or any students in the class. At home parents indicate that he will talk to them, but when the teacher came for a home visit he would not speak with her there. He is an only child and English is spoken in the home. Any strategies/suggestions that the teacher could use?
Maybe start him out with a ring of pictures, each representing some simple communications, like "hi", "bye", arrows to point, "mine", "help", etc. This might help lead into some communications.
Something else that's a long shot is having the parents video record the child talking normally at home doing a show and tell for the classroom. Then, with parent permission, play that for the class. Sometimes this can help break the ice.
Best of luck!
